Reddit's ChatGPT citation share collapsed 86% in a single week Reddit held a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7. On August 14, it dropped below 1% and stayed there. Promptwatch tracked the collapse to a change in ChatGPT's query fan-out behaviour: the use of site: operators jumped from 0.4% to nearly 17% of all fan-out queries on August 8, directing ChatGPT toward official sources instead of UGC platforms. YouTube citations dropped 88%, TikTok 72%, and LinkedIn 36% in the same window. Help centres and product documentation absorbed most of the lost share. Reddit's stock fell roughly 10% as the charts circulated, the same week it joined the S&P 500. Read the Forbes report β02

Google ships its August 2026 spam update, then launches a new core update days later The August 2026 spam update began rolling out on August 18 and completed in under three days, making it the third spam update this year following March and June. No new spam policies were announced. Then on August 26, Google began rolling out the August 2026 core update, which is likely still in progress as you read this. If you are seeing ranking shifts right now, compare GSC positions against both rollout dates before making any content changes. Separating spam-update impact from core-update impact requires patience and clean date ranges. See the full 2026 update timeline β03

GSC Platform Properties are now globally available, and they change what SEOs can measure Google's Platform Properties, introduced on July 7 and now live worldwide, let you connect your Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube accounts to Search Console and see how your social content performs in Search, Discover, and News. You get clicks, impressions, CTR, and the actual queries behind each post. For the first time, social media performance in Google is measurable with first-party data without needing a website at all. ChatGPT's fan-out shift is not Reddit-specific. It is a structural move toward first-party sources. Petra Labs and Qwairy independently confirmed what Promptwatch flagged: the citation collapse hit UGC platforms broadly, not just Reddit. The slots did not vanish. They were reallocated to help centres, product documentation, and official brand pages. For SEOs, this reinforces a practical lesson: first-party content you control, particularly well-structured FAQ pages, support documentation, and knowledge bases, is now more likely to be cited by ChatGPT than a favourable Reddit thread. The brands that invested in owned surfaces are the ones holding steady. Read Something Inc's analysis β

AI Search Audit: Why Your Own Site Isn't Enough This week's lead story about Reddit losing its ChatGPT citation share makes this post even more relevant than when we published it. When an LLM generates a response about your brand, it draws from reviews, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, industry directories, and every other surface where your brand has a presence. If your audit stops at your own domain, you are auditing a fraction of what shapes how AI systems represent you. Panellist Isha shared a finding that challenges a widely held assumption: a website struggling with Google indexing issues was still appearing clearly in AI-generated responses. The reason? AI agents evaluate the full link infrastructure of a site, including canonical pages and filtered product pages that SEOs typically block from traditional crawlers. The eligibility criteria for AI visibility and the eligibility criteria for Google indexing are not the same thing. The article lays out a five-area framework for conducting an AI search audit: technical structure, content clarity, indexing status, third-party presence, and off-site narrative consistency. That last one is the area most current audits miss entirely. If your website says one thing and ten Reddit threads say something else, AI systems will reflect the consensus, not your preferred positioning. "Measuring AI search impact is like trying to count how many people walked into your store because of a billboard. Brand recall is happening. The clean causal line to revenue does not yet exist in any reliable tool." β Isha, SEOTalk Spaces
π¬ Conversations Worth Reading
The Reddit citation collapse dominated SEO discourse this fortnight. Here are two takes worth sitting with.

Kevin Indig Β· Growth Advisor, G2
Kevin Indig (Growth Advisor, G2) pointed out this has happened before. In September 2025, Reddit citations collapsed in ChatGPT too, and that time the likely cause was Google removing a search parameter, not anything OpenAI or Reddit did. SEJ's analysis argues the August 2026 drop is not fully explained either: the six-day gap between ChatGPT's fan-out change and Reddit's actual citation cliff does not fit a single-cause story.

"Pull your ChatGPT citation data for July and August and split it into third-party sources and first-party sources. If the third-party half is more than about a quarter of your total, you have a concentration problem that August just demonstrated for you at no charge. Your next quarter of GEO work is the gap between your sales team's top 20 questions and the crawlable, first-party answers you actually have."

The counter-narrative worth reading. Suganthan read ChatGPT's raw network traffic and found that Reddit did not disappear from the model. It disappeared from the citations. In one session, 84 out of 221 retrieved entries were Reddit threads, but zero were cited. Reddit has become what he calls "an invisible input": opinions feed the answer while the credit goes to vendor pages. He also found that Reddit citations are query-dependent. When a subreddit contains the best practical knowledge, Reddit can still dominate the answer.

This fortnight: The AI brand audit
Search your brand name in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Do it twice: once with web search enabled, once without. Note what comes back. Is the description accurate? Which sources are being cited? Where are competitors appearing in the same responses? Then check one thing from the off-site layer: search your brand name alongside the word "review." Where do you land? If you don't own that surface, you don't own the narrative AI systems will use when someone evaluates you. Share what you found with #SEOTalk β
