68% of Google searches now end without a click β SparkToro's most alarming number yet Rand Fishkin at SparkToro, using Similarweb's clickstream panel across JanuaryβApril 2026, found that 68% of US Google searches ended without a click to any website β not even to Google's own properties. That's up from 60% in 2024, a 7.5-point jump in just two years. Even more striking: an Ahrefs tracker of 75,000+ sites with professional marketers actively fighting for traffic found Google's share of their referrals fell roughly 22% in a single year. The "crocodile mouth" your GSC is showing you isn't a bug. It's the new baseline. Read Rand Fishkin's full analysis β Source: SparkToro / Similarweb clickstream panel, June 202602

Google Preferred Sources expands into AI Overviews and AI Mode β 345,000 sources selected, 2Γ click rate On May 27, Google announced Preferred Sources β its feature letting users choose publishers to prioritise in Search β now extends into AI Overviews and AI Mode, with the rollout beginning in June 2026. Google's own data: people are twice as likely to click through to a Preferred Source when it appears. Over 345,000 unique sources have been selected β nearly four times the figure from late 2024. For publishers, this is one of the few direct levers available to convert audience loyalty into sustained search visibility. The mechanic is simple: add a deeplink CTA anywhere your audience is. No ad spend, no algorithm to game. Read Google's official announcement β Source: Google Search blog, May 27, 202603
Spam Update
Google June 2026 spam update drops β plus an unconfirmed volatility window around June 19 Google released the June 2026 spam update on June 24, applying globally to all languages, with a rollout expected to take a few days. Separately, practitioners reported unconfirmed ranking movement around June 19 that appeared to affect black-hat tactics but didn't show up in standard tracking tools β a reminder that forum-reported drops and tool-measured averages don't always align. Analysts at Digital Applied noted that some of June's sports-vertical volatility was World Cup search demand dilution, not algorithm change. Diagnose your own GSC before concluding an update hit you. Ahrefs: AI Overviews now reduce clicks to top-ranking content by 58% β up from 34.5% in 2025 Ahrefs re-ran their AI Overviews click study using December 2025 data and found the correlation between an AI Overview appearing and reduced CTR had worsened from 34.5% to 58%. Their own blog data showed a positive correlation of just 0.425 between daily impressions and clicks across a six-month period β a dramatic weakening from what that correlation looked like even two years ago. The counter-data point they buried at the bottom: AI-referred visitors to the Ahrefs site convert 23Γ better than traditional organic visits. Lower traffic, higher intent. That's the trade-off. SEOTalk Spaces Recap Β· Episode 134
GSC Impressions Up, Traffic Down: What's Really Going On? If your GSC looks like an open-mouthed crocodile β impressions climbing, clicks flat β you're not alone and you probably haven't broken anything. Parth, who co-hosted Episode 134 with Malhar, gave this phenomenon its name: the crocodile mouth. One jaw goes up. The other barely moves. The gap keeps growing. The episode diagnosed two layers. The first is structural and has been building for years: featured snippets, then AI Overviews, each adding more on-SERP answers and fewer reasons for users to click. What changed recently isn't the mechanism β it's the scale. The impression numbers have climbed high enough that the gap is now impossible to rationalise away. The second layer is newer and less understood: query fan-out. When someone uses Google's AI Mode, the system internally fires multiple related sub-queries to gather context before generating an answer. Each sub-query can generate impressions for your pages. The number on your GSC dashboard is no longer a clean count of human searches. It's a composite of human queries, AI fan-out sub-queries, and LLM bot crawl activity. Reading it the way you read it in 2022 will lead you to the wrong conclusions. Vijay, who shared live data during the session, added a finding worth sitting with: YouTube is the highest cited domain in AI Overview results β and the majority of those cited videos are from third-party creators, not brand-owned channels. Creator partnerships are no longer a soft brand activity. They're an AI citation strategy. Parth's diagnostic: filter GSC for pages with over 5,000 impressions per month but fewer than 10 clicks. A page in that state is either a victim of SERP layout changes or has drifted into irrelevant territory. Both look identical in the data. They require completely different responses.
SEOTalk Spaces Recap Β· Episode 133
Google's New Bet: Loyalty Over Clicks Zero-click searches now account for 60% of all Google queries. Roughly 80% of AI Overview interactions end without a click. The deal that defined SEO for two decades β publish good content, Google sends you traffic β is breaking down. Against that backdrop, Episode 133 asked a harder question: is Google's Preferred Sources feature a lifeline for publishers, or just a way to lock them deeper into its own ecosystem? Small publishers have lost roughly 60% of their search traffic over two years. Large players have lost closer to 20%. That gap isn't closing. Parth's read was direct: Preferred Sources rewards an audience a brand has already built, not helps build one. But the upside he found in testing: users who explicitly add a site as a preferred source keep seeing it even through core algorithm updates. That's a meaningfully different kind of durability than ranking position has ever offered. Isha offered the sharpest framing of the whole premise: this is Google breaking the system and then selling the fix as a cure. "Google created the conditions for zero-click decline through featured snippets and AI Overviews, and is now positioning preferred sources as the remedy to a problem it caused." Whether the remedy meaningfully redistributes traffic back to publishers, or simply gives Google justification to keep doing what it was already doing, nobody on the panel claimed to know. "Don't take that the wrong way β your SEO still matters as much or more than ever before, it just won't earn you traffic the way it once did. Traffic can fall precipitously even as revenue rises. Our belief and advice is to invest in Zero Click Marketing: earning influence and growing your brand's awareness without requiring a visit to your website."

From the SEOTalk community
"Impressions going up while traffic goes down is not a problem to solve. It's a signal to read. The brands that panic and start churning content will make it worse. The ones that ask 'what are these impressions actually telling me?' will find opportunities everyone else missed." Agree or disagree? Reply to this email β or join the debate on X with #SEOTalk

This fortnight: The crocodile mouth audit
Go into GSC and filter for pages with more than 5,000 impressions in the last 90 days but fewer than 10 clicks. Pick your most extreme example. Now ask: is this a SERP layout problem (AI Overview absorbing your clicks) or a relevance drift problem (you're ranking for queries that were never your audience)? Share what you found β the page, the query category, and your diagnosis. One word answers don't count. We want the reasoning. Share your result with #SEOTalk β
